NXP to showcase six new NFC apps at MWC

NXP Semiconductors announced that six NFC service providers will showcase their solutions at NXP’s Mobile World Congress booth next week in Barcelona.

Foursquare, DeviceFidelity and several others will gather at NXP’s “NFC concept café” to demonstrate NFC solutions powered by NXP’s mobile NFC technology, NFC tags, and contactless readers.


  • First up, Touchanote works together with mobile app Evernote to enable users to store links to existing Evernote content on NFC tags. After writing a link to an NFC tag, the note can be opened by simply touching the tag with an NFC Andriod phone.

  • Narian Technologies will demonstrate an NFC application designed to improve customer service for retailers. According to NXP, the app enables customers requiring assistance to request and verify the arrival of an employee and then enter and manage their positions in the queue.

  • Foursquare which now boasts nearly 15 million users and more than 1.5 billion check ins, will demonstrate how NFC support in their Android application enables users to immediately check in by tapping an NFC-enabled badge with a mobile phone.

  • OpenWays, a provider of mobile key solutions for hotels, will demonstrate its NFC-enabled door lock, which enables guests to access their rooms with a tap of a mobile phone.

  • PayByPhone will demonstrate a parking meter application that enables users to tap an NFC tag on the meter to register and pay for the exact amount of time parked.

  • Finally, DeviceFidelity will showcase its In2Pay microSD and In2Pay iCaisse solutions, which add NFC payment functionality to exisiting mobile phones.

The 2012 Mobile World Congress will be held February 27 to March 1 at Fira Montjuïc in Barcelona, Spain. [end] 

RIM has revealed a new NFC sharing app for BlackBerry handsets at BlackBerry World in Orlando, Fla.

According to Pocket-lint, BlackBerry Share enables users with NFC-enabled handsets to share apps with each other by simply tapping the two phones together. Once a connection has been made, each user will be presented with a list of apps the other user has downloaded from BlackBerry App World.

Mobile operator 2degrees has partnered with contactless transit card provider Snapper to bring NFC payments to the city of Wellington, New Zealand.

The new “Touch2Pay” service is now available on 2degrees’ LG Optimus Net phones, which can be used to make tap and go payments wherever Snapper cards are accepted, including buses, taxis, shops and cafes.

Chinese handset manufacturer ZTE has partnered with Turkcell, Turkey’s largest mobile operator, to offer a new SIM-based NFC mobile device for the Turkish market.

The Turkcell T11 handset (aka the ZTE Racer II) can be used to pay for both highway toll payments and items at the point of sale with a simple tap against a contactless reader.
