Thursday, February 23, 2012

Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) has announced that it is supplying NFC-enabled SIM cards to Italian mobile operator Nòverca for a mobile payments pilot.

Six hundred employees and customers of Banca Intesa Sanpaolo can now use their mobile phones to make contactless payments at more than 3,000 point of sale terminals in the northern Italian cities of Milan and Turin.

Pilot participants have been issued NFC-enabled Samsung Wave S5780 smart phones equipped with G&D’s Taurus-generation NFC SIM cards, which enable secure contactless payments over the MasterCard PayPass network.

Setefi, the local service provider for the 3,000 payment terminals involved in the pilot, has set up NFC payment terminals in supermarkets, cafés, retailers and many other locations, according to G&D. [end]
