Sony develops NFC-enabled power outlet

Sony is working on a new kind of power outlet that uses built-in Felica standard IC chips to authenticate users wishing to charge their devices, according to the Verge.

Designed for public use in cafes, restaurants and airport lounges, the power outlet can be accessed with the tap of an NFC enabled phone, contactless card or other Felica-compliant device.


Sony says the technology could also be used to manage power use in office and residential buildings, as well as prevent device theft.

According to the Verge, Sony’s technology is still in the developmental stage, and should take sometime before it sees a commercial debut. Meanwhile, Japanese mobile operator Docomo is rolling out its Qi-powered inductive charging solution “Okudake Juuden” across Japan, which offers free wireless charging.

The Open Standard for Public Transport (OSPT) Alliance announced that austriamicrosystems has joined as a full member.

Sony has announced that its NFC-enabled Xperia S smart phone will be available in Canada by the end of week.

According to Sony, a limited number of Xperia S phones will be available at Sony Stores across Canada beginning April 17. Canadians can purchase their Xperia S, which is compatible with the Rogers wireless network, directly at the Sony Store.

MasterCard has certified a slew of NFC-enabled smart phones for use with MasterCard PayPass contactless payment technology.

Newly certified devices include: BlackBerry Bold 9790, BlackBerry Curve 9380, HTC One X, Intel Smartphone Reference Device, LG Viper 4G LTE, LG Optimus Elite, Nokia 603, Nokia Lumia 610 NFC, Samsung Wave Y, Samsung Galaxy mini 2, Samsung Galaxy S Advance, Samsung Galaxy Nexus (GT-i9250), Sony Xperia S, Sony Xperia P and Sony Xperia sola.

RIM has revealed a new NFC sharing app for BlackBerry handsets at BlackBerry World in Orlando, Fla.

According to Pocket-lint, BlackBerry Share enables users with NFC-enabled handsets to share apps with each other by simply tapping the two phones together. Once a connection has been made, each user will be presented with a list of apps the other user has downloaded from BlackBerry App World.
