Nokia has revealed a new application for smart phones that translates what you say into another language and transmits the message to another user via NFC.
According to GigaOm, “Nokia Hello” combines NFC with existing speech-to-text translation technology to enable two people who speak different languages to have a conversation by tapping their phones together. The user simply speaks his message in his native tongue, the text appears on the phone, and the message is transmitted to the other user’s NFC phone with a simple tap.
Current translation solutions require you to read the translation aloud, and some even read it aloud for you. Nokia Hello, on the other hand, has the distinct advantage of being quiet, and you never have to hand over your phone to have someone read a translation thanks to the wireless transmission.
The Nokia team behind Hello estimates that app could eliminate the need for speech entirely in multilingual work environments by 2015.
