A new survey from Euro Kartensysteme shows that Germans are starting to embrace the idea of contactless and NFC payments.
Out of 1,040 Germans aged 18-59, 43% responded that they would like to make contactless payments if given the opportunity, of which 58% percent would make their payments with a debit card card, 41% with a credit card and 50% with an NFC phone.
Moreover, 58% of respondents said they would make contactless payments for public transportation, 55% would pay at the gas station, 42% for general shopping, and 37% for quick purchases at markets and convenience stores.
Security concerns still appear to be an issue, with only 26% responding that they are confident about the security of the the technology, and 48% replying that it is “relatively safe.”
The German banking industry is now offering contactless payments in the form a “girogo” card, which can be used to make tap and go payments for €20 or less.
According to Euro Kartensysteme, Germany has traditionally been less receptive to contactless payments than its European neighbors. The results of this latest survey, however, are beginning to tell a different story.
