Japan’s three main cell phone providers, NTT DoCoMo, KDDI and Softbank, have joined forces to create the NFC Consortium in hopes of advancing Japan’s contactless payments platform toward international standards.
As reported at :RethinkWireless.com, Japan’s cell providers, who were early adopters of mobile payments, now have non-standard systems, which force consumers to buy Japanese handsets, often at considerable price differences from cheaper, foreign-made phones.
The consortium will add both NFC type A and type B standards to its current Sony FeliCa platform. By doing so, the cellcos hope they can offer low cost NFC services that adhere to international standards.
