Nokia aims to educate UAE on NFC

Tuesday, December 20, 2011

Nokia is launching a campaign to educate consumers in the United Arab Emirates on the benefits of using NFC technology in mobile devices.

The first of its kind in the UAE, the campaign will kick off with the installation of NFC-enabled posters at the VOX cinema in the Mall of the Emirates from Thursday to Saturday. All Nokia N9 smart phone users will be able to tap the posters to receive free cinema tickets, refreshments and the latest movie schedules from VOX cinema, according to Nokia.

The campaign plays into Nokia’s overarching Open NFC strategy for the region. The strategy enables consumers to share content within devices and also initiate services such as launching apps direct to websites, initiating calls and downloading vouchers by simply tapping their NFC device on NFC tags and smart posters. Nokia says this approach will build a platform to educate consumers on NFC through fun and compelling consumer propositions.

Nokia is also working with operators, banks and other partners in the region to launch secure NFC payments in the first half of 2012.

“NFC is much more than a payment solution,” added Birchall. “It’s a significant application of the technology but not the whole story. We believe in the value of initially concentrating on Open NFC activities to help educate consumers on the daily value of NFC and to change the way in which they use their devices.” [end]

Nokia is launching a commercial trial of its PagSeguro NFC payments app in Brazil, the company announced via its official blog.

Starting in May, owners of Nokia C7, N9 and 701 handsets will be able to use PagSeguro to pay for items at NFC-enabled points of sale, as well as transfer funds between users.
