What will it take to use NFC for physical access?

Say “mobile wallet” and most people think payment–tapping your phone against a reader instead of swiping a card. But the phrase may soon come to encompass not just your credit card, but your entire wallet: loyalty cards, work ID, access credentials and all–and potentially even the keys jingling in your pocket.

Since NFC uses the same standard as contactless smart cards, the technology could enable employers to take existing smart ID cards that are used to get into the office and transfer it over to the phone–a process called “card emulation.” Making this a reality, however, is not as easy as it sounds, explains to Jeff Fonseca, director of business development and sales at NXP Semiconductors.

RIM has revealed a new NFC sharing app for BlackBerry handsets at BlackBerry World in Orlando, Fla.

According to Pocket-lint, BlackBerry Share enables users with NFC-enabled handsets to share apps with each other by simply tapping the two phones together. Once a connection has been made, each user will be presented with a list of apps the other user has downloaded from BlackBerry App World.

Denizbank, a private bank with 588 branches in Turkey, has joined Turkcell’s Cep-T Cuzdan platform, enabling its customers to make contactless payments with their NFC-enabled handsets.

Samsung is looking to use NFC-enabled mobile access credentials in place of ID cards for workers at its Suwon, South Korea offices.

According to The Verge, the new system would enable Samsung employees to tap their phones against a reader to access their building and other secure areas, rather than present a traditional ID card.

The Lee County School District in southwest Florida is the latest to experiment with palm scanners in an effort to move the lunch line along faster. Students currently have to key in their ID number. If they make a mistake, it can slow down the line.

The world of plastic cards is by the looks of things really going to get smaller.All of these innovations are great unless your in th plastic cards business.
