Russian MNO taps G&D for pay at the pump NFC service

Tuesday, October 11, 2011

Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) and Sitronics Smart Technologies (SST) are teaming up to manufacture and personalize NFC-capable SIM cards for a mobile payment system in Russia.

The first of it’s kind in Russia, the solution will enable customers of leading Mobile TeleSystems, a leading Russian MNO, to tap and pay for gas at Lukoil service stations using only their mobile phones.

According to G&D, the system will use its NFC enabled SIM cards, which can be used in a wide range of available mobile phones, including Samsung, Nokia, HTC, Sony Ericsson, RIM, Motorola or LG

To complete a transaction at the pump, all the customer has to do is hold his or her cell phone against the card reader. The invoice amount is debited via an electronic cash function on the SIM card that MTS customers can activate with the provider.

Lukoil, the second largest oil company in Russia, will introduce the system at stations in Perm, a city of around one million inhabitants in the Ural region.

Following active pre-commercial tests, MTS and Lukoil will launch the commercial phase in Nov. 2011. [end]
