NFC-enabled sleep tracking system now available through T-Mobile

Thursday, October 6, 2011

Meridian Health, iMPak Health and T-Mobile have announced the successful deployment of their NFC-enabled SleepTrak sleep monitoring system.

The system uses a SleepTrack card, a credit card-sized wireless device that is secured in a band worn around the upper arm, that tracks and monitors the user’s sleep habits through actigraphy, a widely used test method in sleep labs, according to iMPak. Users can load data from the card onto a Nokia Astound NFC phone with a simple tap, and the free SleepTrak mobile application assess the sleep pattern data and provides feedback.

According to the partners, the solution brings a complex professional sleep assessment session to the consumer market for a fraction of the price, and thanks to NFC, even more home-based health care applications are possible in the near future.

“With this deployment, we successfully combined the expertise of a health care organization, a telemedicine technology company, and a wireless operator to deliver cost-effective, easy-to-use tools that allow users to take control of their own health and act on the information provided,” said Sandra Elliott, Director of Consumer Technology and Service Development for Meridian Health.

The SleepTrak card is available for purchase on Amazon.com for around $30, and the SleepTrak app can be downloaded for free on Nokia’s Ovi Store. The Nokia Astound is currently available through T-Mobile. [end]

iMPak Health has announced the launch of RhythmTrak, an NFC-enabled mobile application that enables users to track their cardiovascular health at home.

RhythmTrak is a handheld, credit card sized electrocardiogram (ECG) device that both documents heart rates and heart rate variability and calculates intervals and single lead waveforms. Data collected on the device is transmitted wirelessly using a NFC reader or an NFC enabled smart phone or tablet, enabling the user to simply forward the information to their physician.
