Google Wallet rollout slower than expected

Tuesday, September 27, 2011

Google is experiencing a couple of minor glitches in the rollout of its nascent Google Wallet mobile payments service, according to Macworld.

The company has reported “slower than normal” wait times for adding credit and debit cards to the Google Wallet, in addition to delayed over-the-air updates to Nexus S smart phones, with some users not receiving the app at all by the promised Friday deadline.

A Google Help Desk representative told Macworld, “The rollout is kind of a slow rollout. They are still working on that. There’s no specific time frame for when it will be complete. You should see it soon.”

Another spokeswoman for Google added that “100 percent” of Nexus S users should receive the Gogole Wallet app by this Friday.

According to analysts cited by Macworld, sluggish wireless software rollouts such as these are “common,” and normally take more than a few days to avoid “jamming” the network.

Still, Google has been criticized for making (and breaking) such an ambitious promise, and some analysts worry that the slow card uploads may indicate greater problems in the Google Wallet infrastructure, reports Macworld.
