Sonim debuts rugged NFC phone

Friday, September 23, 2011

Sonim Technologies has revealed the world’s first ‘ultra-rugged’ NFC phone, the XP1301 CORE NFC.

Now on display at the NFC World Congress, the XP1301 is designed to provide NFC-enabled real time business intelligence for markets such as cleaning, security, facilities management, equipment maintenance and home visit health care.

According to Sonim, the device can take an incredible amount of abuse, like being dropped from two meters onto concrete or fully submerged in water for up to 60 minutes. The handset can also operate at temperatures ranging from -20 to +55 Celsius and features an impact and puncture proof Corning Gorilla Glass screen.

Inside Secure provided Sonim with the NFC technology for the XP1301, enabling it to read and write NFC tags and contactless ID badges.

As seen in the video, data collected by the XP1301 CORE NFC is sent over the mobile network to a server that generates reports and alerts that can be used to optimize the efficiency, consistency and quality of service operations. Data returned to the phone and displayed on the screen can remind the worker of the next action to be taken. Since the position of the tags is known, the nearest worker or security guard can be mobilized to the location where immediate attention is needed.

The handset is currently available in Europe and the UK for around $480. [end]
