Smart Card Alliance launches U.S. m-payments report

Monday, September 19, 2011

The Smart Card Alliance has announced the launch of a new white paper examining and comparing the different approaches to the burgeoning mobile payments market in the U.S.

“The Mobile Payments and NFC Landscape: A U.S. Perspective” provides an overview of the state of the market and evaluates the advantages and disadvantages of using NFC, non-integrated contactless, bar codes, cloud-based solutions, and SMS as mobile payments channels.

The report also provides a summary of the merchant, consumer, issuer, and mobile operator requirements for NFC mobile payments as well as an update on the status of the NFC payments infrastructure.

“Technology is always changing, especially within the mobile and payments industries, so it is difficult to predict when and how mobile payments will become commonplace in the United States,” said Randy Vanderhoof, executive director at the SCA. “The goal of this white paper is to help industry stakeholders understand the current mobile payments landscape, anticipate how mobile payments are likely to change, and appreciate the opportunities that mobile payments, and particularly NFC-enabled mobile contactless payments, present.”

The paper is now available to download for free on the Smart Card Alliance Web site[end]
