Orange to launch Samsung Wave 578 with NFC

Orange has announced that the long-awaited Samsung Wave 578 handset is coming soon to UK stores preloaded with Orange’s Quick Tap NFC SIM for mobile payments, according to Somobile.

Originally announced back in February, the NFC-enabled Wave 578 runs on Samsung’s latest Bada OS and features a 3.2-inch touch screen, 16 GB built-in memory, WiFi connectivity, and is the second Orange phone to offer mobile payments behind the Samsung Tocco Quick Tap.


Orange hasn’t revealed a specific release date for the Wave 578 yet, but its coming soon page hints that the phone will come free with certain monthly pay plans.

MasterCard has certified a slew of NFC-enabled smart phones for use with MasterCard PayPass contactless payment technology.

Newly certified devices include: BlackBerry Bold 9790, BlackBerry Curve 9380, HTC One X, Intel Smartphone Reference Device, LG Viper 4G LTE, LG Optimus Elite, Nokia 603, Nokia Lumia 610 NFC, Samsung Wave Y, Samsung Galaxy mini 2, Samsung Galaxy S Advance, Samsung Galaxy Nexus (GT-i9250), Sony Xperia S, Sony Xperia P and Sony Xperia sola.

U.K. mobile operator Orange has announced that it will expand its Quick Tap contactless payments service to NFC-enabled Android handsets, according to The Telegraph.

Originally available only on the Samsung Tocco and Samsung Wave 578, Quick Tap lets users make contactless mobile purchases of up to £15 at nearly 70,000 retailers around the U.K., including McDonald’s, Subway and Prêt a Manger.
