HTC, China UnionPay bring NFC payments to China

HTC Corp. has signed a deal with China UnionPay, China’s only credit card network, to launch a new NFC-enabled smart phone for mobile banking, according to Focus Taiwan.
The 4-inch, Android-powered HTC “Stunning” will allow UnionPay customers to pay their bills from their phones as well as make contactless payments at the point of sale.
HTC says it will work with Shanghai F-road Commerce Service Co., a Chinese mobile app developer, to roll out the new service.
“HTC believes that mobile payments will become an indispensable function for smart phones, and we expect to jointly establish a complete industry chain of mobile payments based on such a strategic alliances,” said Fred Liu, president of HTC engineering and operations.
The handsets can be used to make payments at about 40,000 stores and 17,000 ATM’s across China, according to Focus Taiwan.
