Vodafone looking to launch NFC payments in New Zealand

Tuesday, July 12, 2011

Vodafone CEO Russell Stanners has announced that the company is working with banks to potentially roll out NFC payments in New Zealand, according to Computerworld.

Stanners told the Trans-Tasman Business Circle yesterday that the infrastructure for NFC payments is already in place, and the company is currently in talks with banks on how to introduce the service. The only hold up, Stanners says, is waiting on device manufacturers to start embracing NFC.

Stanners also told Computerworld that New Zealand has recently upgraded its POS terminal system, making them capable of handling contactless payments.

“Our interest is to make it based on using the SIM card,” said Stanners, “because SIM cards means you can take it to any phone.”

New Zealand is gearing up for a contactless payment trial during the Rugby World Cup in September, during which fans will be able to make contactless purchases around the stadium using MasterCard’s PayPass technology.
