Solacia inks $16 million USIM card deal with SK Telecom

Tuesday, June 28, 2011

Solacia has announced it will provide its NFC-enabled USIM cards to SK Telecom, South Korea’s largest mobile service provider.

The $16 million contract, which also calls for Solacia’s Combi USIM, is the first of its kind for USIM technology, setting a new precedent as global mobile companies prepare to integrate NFC into new mobile devices, according to Solacia.

Solacia, which also makes an LTE USIM it claims will be the future standard of 4G, is providing its NFC USIM cards to SK Telecom rival KT as well in a deal worth approximately $1.6 million.

“There have been many technical debates between LTE and WiMAX for the standard of 4G, however, LTE has been clearly adopted as the standard and endorsed by North America’s two largest mobile carriers and others around the world. There is no longer a debate for the 4G standard and the technical advantages of LTE but, rather how fast and effectively LTE can be applied in the market,” said Seung Jin Park, Solacia COO.

Solacia will begin providing its USIM cards to SK Telecom in March 2012. [end]
