Danish telecoms unite for mobile wallet

Friday, June 24, 2011

TDC, Telenor, TeliaSonera and 3 Denmark have joined forces to launch a digital wallet service based on NFC technology, reports PC World.

Expected to roll out this fall, the service will allow customers to use their mobile phones to make contactless purchases, pay for fares on public transit, use digital coupons and even check out library books.

The operators say that they will offer a single platform that will allow customers to switch from company to company without having to change their wallet.

So far there has been no word on partnerships with phone makers, banks, card companies and retailers, which will be essential for the success of the system, says PC World.

With the first NFC SIM cards arriving in Denmark this fall, the partners say it will only take a few years before NFC technology catches on and the service can go mainstream.
