Google, Sprint to launch NFC payments?

Tuesday, May 24, 2011

Google is teaming up with Sprint Nextel to launch a mobile payments service using NFC technology on May 26, three people close to the project told Bloomberg.

The sources say the service will let consumers with NFC-enabled Android phones from Sprint pay for goods and redeem coupons using only their handsets. The technology is currently available on the Google’s Nexus S phone.

Neither Google nor Sprint could be reached for a comment on the new partnership, although Google has sent out invitations for a press event in New York on May 26.

In the meantime, Sprint is reportedly working with a number of handset makers and tech partners on NFC payment systems, while Google is readying NFC payments in five U.S. cities, including New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington, D.C.
