Solacia, a Korean mobile embedded software developer, has achieved Common Criteria certification for its NFC-enabled universal subscriber identity module (USIM), according to Etnews.co.kr.
The international standard for computer security certification, Common Criteria is designed to ensure that the process of specification, implementation and evaluation of a computer security product has been conducted in a rigorous and standard manner. Solacia’s USIM obtained certification at the Evaluation Assurance Level 4+ (EAL4+) after six months of technical assessment, making it the first certified NFC-enabled USIM in Korea, says CEO Park Yoon-ky.
Historically, USIM and SIM cards have not been subject to the same stringent security criteria as financial or ID cards, says Etnews. Solacia expects this to emerge as an important issue as NFC-enabed mobile payment gains momentum.
Ki Sang-seo, head of the Solacia’s technology development center, comments: “Based on the certification of our NFC-enabled USIM technology, we will expand our business into other applications including electronic resident registration card, driver’s license, and medical insurance card while making an inroad into overseas market.”
