Eurosmart releases market figures, new members and future plans

Eurosmart gathered at its Brussels headquarters to announce new members, underline 2010 key achievements, and deliver a vision for future developments. At the General Assembly, Eurosmart increased the final figure for shipments in Telecom market segment in 2010 to bring the total shipment of microcontroller based Smart Secure Devices above 5.5 billion in 2010.

Forecasts for 2011 predict the 6 billion bar will be crossed with major growth drivers including SIM shipments in India, Indonesia, China and Brazil. Also, worldwide EMV migration, in particular Latin America and Asia, along with multiple commercial NFC deployments happening worldwide contribute to this estimate.


Also mentioned at the Eurosmart General Assembly were Bureau officials and Eursmarts newest Association members.

Eurosmart Bureau officials now include

  • Marc Bertin (Oberthur Technologies) as Chairman

  • Oyvind Rastad (Gemalto) as Vice-Chairman

  • Dr. Jochen Schöllmann (Giesecke & Devrient) as Vice-Chairman,

  • Dr. Helmut Gassel (Infineon Technologies) as Treasurer

  • Bruno Dupont as Secretary General

And new Association members joining Eurosmart

  • LFoundry, European provider for foundry services and joint technology

  • Electronic Marin, active in semiconductors in the field of smart cards

  • Prooftag, French provider in securing official documents and products using manufactured biometrics

  • Fraunhofer Institute, (Institute for Secure Information Technology )

  • Bernard Morvant, independent consultant for smart secure transaction solutions

  • Jonas Andersson, provider on smart cards as ID documents and the use of biometrics.

HSBC announced that it will begin the conversion to contactless technology this month, replacing all customer banking debit cards, according to ThinkMoney.com.

The bank will start to roll out the new contactless cards to existing customers whose debit cards are due to expire this month and then continue the process as cards expire. Customers who don’t want a contactless card can opt out by contacting their bank before their current card expires.
