Multicard, Rabobank roll out contactless mobile payment stickers

Thursday, August 19, 2010

Multicard, a business unit of Identive Group, announced that it has been selected by Rabobank to provide personalization and fulfillment services for the Dutch bank’s latest application of its MiniTix cashless e-payment solution.

Multicard will manage product delivery, encoding and customer support for MiniTix, a program that allows Rabobank’s employees to make cashless payments using e-payment labels on their mobile phones.

Rabobank’s MiniTix solution provides an alternative to the “chipknip” electronic cash system currently used throughout the Netherlands. Like chipknip, MiniTix is intended for small retail payments where credit card fees do not make economic sense. However, the MiniTix virtual wallet can be managed online rather than having to be loaded with credit at special banking terminals, and payments can be made using a mobile phone or a contactless token such as a key fob or wristband.

Rabobank is allowing its employees to use their MiniTix accounts to make purchases in the workplace. Eventually the bank plans to sign up additional merchants and facilities such as soccer stadiums to participate in the program. [end]

Multicard has announced the expanded roll out of its Cashless Betalen mobile banking solution with NFC payment stickers across the Netherlands.

Cashless Betalen, the account management application behind the digital wallet offered by Rabobank, enables users to check their account balances, transfer and deposit funds and make payments and can be accessed via any connected mobile device. As part of the roll out, Multicard is also providing digital wallet customers with NFC stickers, or “tokens,” that can be affixed to the back of a user’s mobile phone to purchase items with a simple tap at the point of sale.
