NFC may get the breakthrough it needs with upcoming city transit projects and a new line of Nokia phones, according to Network World.
Just last week, Nokia announced that next year’s batch of Symbian mobile phones will contain NFC technology. ABI Research says this move will spark growth in the number of NFC chipset vendors, ultimately resulting in lower costs for phone vendors due to boosted competition.
According to Juniper Research, there are more NFC phones coming down the pipeline from other mobile manufacturers in addition to currently available interim solutions, such as NFC stickers, SIM cards and micro SD cards.
NFC is also seeing worldwide adoption for contactless transit systems, namely in the Czech city of Pilsen and in the Moscow Metro.
JR also reports that NFC is “ideally suited” for transit or metro ticketing, but installing the technology in retail locations will be more difficult and costly, as it requires upgrading the store’s POS terminals with contactless readers.
