Plans for NFC-enabled iPhone case leaked

Visa and DeviceFidelity let slip plans to make an NFC-enabled case for the iPhone, according The Register and NFC World.

The case, whose announcement came about via a premature press release, will come equipped with NFC hardware and a secure element from DeviceFidelity to allow users to make contactless payments with their 3G or 3GS iPhones at Visa PayWave points of sale.


According to the Register, this NFC-enabled case would offer an advantage over microSD NFC chips since the latter’s signal tends to be weakened due to it being situated between the phone’s battery and the motherboard.

DeviceFidelity and SpringCard have unveiled moneto, a multiplatform mobile wallet solution for iPhone and Android users.

Much like DeviceFidelity’s In2Pay solution, moneto relies on a protective iPhone case equipped with an NFC-enabled microSD card. The moneto mobile wallet is powered by MasterCard PayPass technology and linked to a reloadable MasterCard prepaid card to enable contactless mobile purchases wherever PayPass is accepted.

Ed McLaughlin, MasterCard’s head of Emerging Payments, has some good news for those waiting on NFC-enabled phones for contactless payments.

In an interview with Fast Company, McLaughlin said that he didn’t know of a handset maker who wasn’t working on integrating support for PayPass contactless payments.

South Korean teleco KT has launched Wireless Dynamic’s NFC-enabled protective case for the iPhone 4.

The Apple-approved iCarte 420K attaches directly onto the iPhone to enable contactless applications through KT’s Olleh Touch NFC service. Customers using the service can load credit and debit cards onto their phone to make payments at participating merchants, as well as use their phone to pay for fares on public transit.

Australia’s Commonwealth Bank has officially launched its Kaching mobile payments app for the iPhone, reports ZD Net.

Kaching enables Commbank customers to make contactless payments powered by MasterCard PayPass, as well as transfer funds to friends via Facebook and perform a number of mobile banking tasks.
