NXP, Trusted Logic launch open source Android API

Wednesday, April 21, 2010

NXP and Trusted Logic today announced the release of an open source NFC Android application programming interface (API).

The new API will enable mobile phone users to access a new range of contactless applications such as mobile payments, transport and event ticketing as well as data sharing directly from their Android phones.

The API will also allow application and service providers to develop their NFC applications within a standard framework, driving the creation of more applications by handset manufacturers and independent application developers.

According to NXP, a second-generation NFC Android stack based on this Open NFC API is now available that provides a complete integration into the Android framework, comparable to the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi services already integrated in Android. [end]

According to NXP, the PN65N solution comprises an NFC radio controller and an embedded Secure Element, and is fully integrated on the latest release of Android 4.0, aka “Ice Cream Sandwich.” NXP says the availability of its open-source NFC software on 4.0 will enable more handset and tablet manufacturers to create NFC Android devices.
