Infocommunication Union to launch NFC test zone in Russia

The Infocommunication Union (ICU) has announced that it will establish an NFC test zone at select railway stations in Russia by spring 2010.

The Infocommunication Union is a non-profit organization whose board members include representatives of the four leading mobile operators in Russia: VympelCom, MegaFon, MTS, Moskovskaya Sotovaya Svyaz.


ICU has been working up to the deployment of a test zone since it was first established in 2008. The goal of the project is to develop mass NFC services in the mobile networks of the Russian Federation.

The test zone will be established in railway stations in spring of 2010, with new NFC-based mobile services of payment for railway tickets on the way for summer 2010. [end] 

SEPTA’s (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority) proposed smart card fare system has met some resistance from passenger advocates, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Essentially, the proposition entails railway passengers taking a free train into the Philadelphia’s Center City station and paying a roundtrip fare on ride home, reports The Inquirer.
