Vodafone, Renfe pilot NFC for Madrid trains

Vodafone has teamed up with Spanish railway operator Renfe to launch an NFC payment trial in Renfre’s Madrid train stations.

Users will be able to access the trains by tapping their NFC-enabled mobile phones against readers installed on the platforms.

The project aims to improve the passengers flow at Renfe stations, particularly during peak hours. The system will be tested in the suburban stations first to determine whether a city-wide launch is appropriate.

The Chicago Transit Authority is planning to pilot an array of credit card acceptance technologies on city buses, including contactless payment, according to cardratings.com.

The CTA is planning the switch in order to save time and tighten up efficiency. Research shows that a typical cash transaction takes 25 seconds, as opposed to a credit card swipe, which takes only 2. Cash transactions can therefore lead to delayed routes and missed connections.

Ingenico and Bank Asya are partnering to deploy contactless payment terminals in taxi cabs at the Sabiha Gökçen Airport in Istanbul, Turkey.

For the upcoming pilot, Bank Aysa will supply 114 taxi cabs with Ingenico’s EFT930 GPRS Mobile Terminals, allowing customers to pay for fares with contactless credit or debit cards, as well as traditional mag stripe cards.

SEPTA’s (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority) proposed smart card fare system has met some resistance from passenger advocates, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Essentially, the proposition entails railway passengers taking a free train into the Philadelphia’s Center City station and paying a roundtrip fare on ride home, reports The Inquirer.
