Attachment turns iPhone into NFC device

Wireless Dynamics has released a new accessory that turns an iPhone into an RFID/NFC reader with contactless payment capability.

With the iCarte, NFC and RFID tag information can be written and read and communicated to the iPhone or to any Computer with a USB port.

iCarte also features an embedded smart-chip that can be configured as debit, credit, pre-paid and loyalty cards for secure contactless transactions.


iCarte can read NFC Smart Posters, download or upload electronic coupons, tickets or receipts, or can be used for commercial applications such as asset tracking, document tracking, health care, security and access control.

The iCarte operates at 13.56MHz and supports a wide range of ISO14443A/B and ISO15693 tags including NXP MIFARE and I-CODE SLI, Texas Instrument Tag-it HF-I, and more. The device works with iPhone 3G and 3GS with OS version 3.0 or higher and has a mini-USB connector that can be used to charge the iPhone and sync with iTunes. [end] 

Oracle Corporation has announced that its latest Java Card 3.0.4 platform will include support for NFC to enable secure communication between devices, reports Hothardware.com.

According to Oracle, Java Card enables smart cards and other devices with very limited memory to run small applications, called applets, that employ Java technology. Almost any type of smart card can use Java Card technology, including SIM cards, bank cards, government and health care IDs, smart transit tickets and physical and logical access control credentials.

Australia’s ANZ has completed a pilot of a mobile phone app that allows small business to accept contactless credit card payments, according to itnews.com.au.

The ePOS Mobile app is the first of its kind to be trialed by a major bank in Australia, and its only competition appears to be an independent app created by freelance web designer Michael Dimoudis called iCCPay, which has so far seen 75 downloads without the support of banks or payment processors.
