Mention near field communication and most think mobile payments. That’s probably because the next generation technology is being touted as a replacement for contactless cards or potentially even the next wallet. NFC will enable a phone to carry all your credit cards, loyalty cards, maybe eventually even your driver license.

But what makes NFC so attractive is the wide range of applications it can support, whether it’s opening a door, logging into your computer, signing on to the Internet, or using your phone like a PDA stylus, touching points on a map or other display to gather further information or directions.

Dubai-based Simage Technologies has announced the release of its new Secure Contactless Token, a multi-purpose biometric device for secure ID, payments and secure authentication.

With the new device, users can securely access their bank accounts online, pay for public transportation or goods at supporting retail locations, access e-government services with secure ID verification and store electronic health records.

MarketsandMarkets has released a new report predicting that the value of mobile payment transactions in the US will reach $56 billion in 2015.

According to the report, “Mobile Payment - Advanced Technologies (NFC), Strategies And Future Of Remote & Proximity Payment In US,” the market for NFC mobile payment in the US is currently in its infancy, with an adoption rate of only 1.7%.

Singapore-based electronic payments provider Nets and Nera Telecommunications Ltd announced that they have implemented a completely cashless payment service on Singapore’s Plus1 buses.

Under the new system, commuters will have to pay using only contactless NETS FlashPay cards. Bus drivers will no longer accept cash and will not be provided with cash boxes on their daily routes.
