Tyfone completes testing secure memory card for contactless payments/NFC rollout

Monday, January 12, 2009

Portland, Ore.-based Tyfone, a provider of a mobile financial services infrastructure, says it has completed the testing phase of its u4ia Secure Memory Card technology designed to secure contactless mobile payments.

The company also announced joint system testing with its manufacturing partner, NXP Semiconductors. Tyfone believes this could also accelerate the global rollout and adoption of mobile payments.

Tyfone’s u4ia SMC is a memory card-based mobile contactless payments solution with an integrated NFC chipset, controller and antenna. The technology operates in any secure digital memory card slot, in any form factor, i.e., micro, mini, regular.

Tyfone anticipates a number of partnerships, market trials and/or full deployments will result from these tests. Tyfone’s u4ia SMC works in hundreds of millions of phones worldwide and eliminates the requirement for carriers to invest in multiple related technologies, including SIM, single wire protocol and NFC handsets.

Tyfone is currently scheduling market trials around the world with mobile operators, financial institutions, and closed-loop fare management providers. [end]

Sticking to its plan for a contactless rollout in 2012, Australian retailer Coles has selected Ingenico to provide its Ingenico iPP350 contactless payment terminals.

According to finextra.com, the Aussie retailer first piloted the technology in September 2011, and has since decided to expand. All business groups will deploy the new iPP350 across 24,000 lanes within the next few months, making the retailer one of the first in Australia to offer the contactless payment option.
