Company has come a long way from seven guys wanting to make their own contactless chips

INSIDE Contactless might never have seen the light of day had Gemplus 13-years ago accepted the suggestion of some of its engineers to begin producing its own chips. Gemplus, which later merged with Axalto to become the largest smart card producer in the world, said no and seven of its people walked away in 1995 to create their own company.

Didier Serra, INSIDE’s executive vice president of sales and managing director for North America, was one of those seven. “You have to be a bit crazy sometimes. If you’re not crazy you don’t take the risk.”

Superdrug, one of Britain’s largest beauty and health retailers, has introduced contactless payment for its in-store customers, according to Retail Gazette.

Created by Streamline and Visa Europe, the contactless system will enable customers to make payments of up to £15 (approx. USD $23) by simply waving their contactless bank card at the more than 50 participating Superdrug stores in London and Liverpool.

Inside Secure has launched a free, open-source NFC protocol stack for Google’s new Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich” mobile operating system.

According to Inside, Open NFC 4.3.3 is compliant with the Ice Cream Sandwich release Compatibility Definition Document (CDD) for NFC, and supports all the latest Android NFC features, including Android Beam and WiFi Direct pairing connection.

The UK’s YESpay International and YES-wallet.com have teamed up to build an NFC-enabled cloud-based mobile payments platform.

By integrating the YES-wallet Pouch digital wallet with YESpay EMBOSS payment service, the companies will provide a platform that encompasses e-Money, pre-paid and gift-card payments based on Visa PayWave and MasterCard PayPass contactless standards.
