TeliaSonera, VingCard demo NFC hotel room access

Thursday, November 13, 2008

TeliaSonera, a Swedish telecommunication services provider to Nordic and Baltic countries, and VingCard, a member of the ASSA ABLOY Group, recently demonstrated at the International Hotel/Motel and Restaurant Show in New York, what could be the newest hotel innovation–allowing guests to enter their hotel rooms using just an NFC-compatible mobile phone.

“VingCard has installed over 100,000 Signature RFID/NFC locks around the world,” said Pascal Metivier, EMEA president of ASSA ABLOY Hospitality. “Major hotel groups across Scandinavia are installing these locks.”

With Signature RFID/NFC, VingCard’s latest contactless electronic lock system, hotel guests use their mobile phone to open the hotel room door. The booking confirmation, room number and an encrypted room key are sent to the guest’s mobile phone before they arrive at the hotel, avoiding the need to check-in at the front desk. On arrival, the guest can proceed directly to his room since the key to that room is already encoded in his phone.

TeliaSonera and VingCard are exploring opportunities for further cooperation in the field of NFC access management. [end]

VingCard, a hospitality security provider and part of the ASSA ABLOY Group, has completed its installation of Signature contactless electronic door locks with NFC cell phone compatibility at the Sea Pearl Villas Resort in Phuket, Thailand. While the hotel is open now, the resort itself isn’t scheduled to open until the third quarter of 2010.
