Nokia, a worldwide leader in Near Field Communications (NFC) technology, is launching a new 3G handset with embedded NFC called the 6212 Classic. Re:ID podcast host Chris Corum spoke with Damien Balsan, Nokia’s Head of NFC Business Development for the Americas, about the new device. The two also explored NFC progress in the Americas, the impact of differing handset sales channels on regional rollout, and whether the ‘killer application’ will prove to be payment or something a bit more personal.

All new smart phones developed by Nokia from 2011 will include NFC, according to an NFC World report. This comes as part of an announcement made by Anssi Vanjoki, Nokia’s executive vice president for markets, at a keynote presentation during this year’s Mobey Forum meeting in Helsinki, Finland. No specific details about the new models were release, but Vanjoki did suggest that phones would include support for single wire protocol, which enables NFC functionality to be delivered via the user’s SIM instead of via the embedded secure element.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is reportedly testing a new NFC-enabled Nokia smart phone, according to phonescoop.com.

The unnamed phone, which Phone Scoop says could feature mobile payment capabilities, also supports Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) on radio bands used by AT&T and T-Mobile’s 3G networks.

Even though full commercial deployment of NFC is a ways off–by some estimates several years away–one handset manufacturer well positioned to take advantage of the new technology when it does go mainstream is Finnish handset manufacturer Nokia.
