Gonzaga University trials phone-based payments on campus and around town

College students can be ideal test subjects for new technology, particularly if it’s “cool.” While programs testing near field communication are cropping up worldwide, until now the use of cell phones as a payment mechanism has rarely included colleges. Even though one or two universities have started to use contactless tags attached to cell phones, until Gonzaga University jumped into NFC earlier this year, this technology wasn’t evident among collegians.

American Express rolls out prepaid cards at Barnes and Noble college bookstores

American Express has launched its Campus Edition prepaid card, a reloadable card available at more than 500 Barnes & Noble college bookstores across the United States. The card will provide college students with a spending and budgeting tool that can be used wherever American Express Cards are accepted.

Higher One signs 25+ new contracts, 10 renewals in fourth quarter

Higher One announced that it has added more than 25 new schools that will utilize its refund disbursement services and renewed contracts for 10 existing customers during the fourth quarter of 2011. The company now services about 200,000 more students.

U.S. Bank rolls out campus ID, prepaid MasterCard at Michigan community college

U.S. Bank and Oakland Community College, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., have launched a combined campus ID and prepaid MasterCard program for the school’s 78,000 students and 788 staff members.

San Bernardino students use their college IDs to ride buses

Students from the Art Institute of California, San Bernardino, have joined other students from other area colleges in using their ID cards to ride the local Omnitrans buses. With a simple swipe of their card, students can ride the buses at anytime on any route, not just to and from campus.

Security breach at New York college puts credit cards at risk

If you want to use a credit or debit card at College of Brockport dining halls, forget it. Until the end of the school term, it’s mostly cash only due to a security breach which affected hundreds of credit and debit cards from students, staff and faculty.
