The Nokia Eco Sensor concept to use NFC

Nokia is developing a phone that will utilize NFC technology, but not in the way normally thought of. The company is looking for “new ways to help us all reduce our environmental footprint.” To meet this goal, the Nokia Research Center supported by Nokia designers conceived the Nokia Eco Sensor Concept. The visionary design concept is a mobile phone and compatible sensing device that will help you stay connected to your friends and loved ones, as well as to your health and local environment. You can also share the environmental data your sensing device collects and view other users’ shared data, thereby increasing your global environmental awareness.

The concept consists of two parts – a wearable sensor unit which can sense and analyze your environment, health, and local weather conditions, and a dedicated mobile phone.

The sensor unit will be worn on a wrist or neck strap made from solar cells that provide power to the sensors. NFC technology will relay information by touch from the sensors to the phone or to or to other devices that support NFC technology.

Siemens along with the University of Graz, Austria have created an RFID-enabled blood monitoring system, according to AZoSensors.

The system consists of a temperature sensor, a chip and a battery. RFID labels contain information about the blood and help regulate the complete cooling series by using temperature sensors. The sensor remains in the same position throughout the entire transportation system, including the centrifuge, and is strong enough to endure centrifugal processes at 5000 times the acceleration of gravity.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is reportedly testing a new NFC-enabled Nokia smart phone, according to phonescoop.com.

The unnamed phone, which Phone Scoop says could feature mobile payment capabilities, also supports Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) on radio bands used by AT&T and T-Mobile’s 3G networks.

All new smart phones developed by Nokia from 2011 will include NFC, according to an NFC World report. This comes as part of an announcement made by Anssi Vanjoki, Nokia’s executive vice president for markets, at a keynote presentation during this year’s Mobey Forum meeting in Helsinki, Finland. No specific details about the new models were release, but Vanjoki did suggest that phones would include support for single wire protocol, which enables NFC functionality to be delivered via the user’s SIM instead of via the embedded secure element.
